Berlin maintains position on Russia’s Nord Stream-2 pipeline
BERLIN, Jun 8 (PRIME) – Berlin’s position regarding Russia’s Nord Stream-2 natural gas pipeline projects remains the same, an official representative for the German economic and Energy Ministry told PRIME Wednesday.
Earlier on Wednesday, Bloomberg reported that Germany’s Vice Chancellor and Economic and energy Minister Sigmar Gabriel planned to meet with European Commission for Climate Action and Energy Miguel Arias Canete to discuss conditions for Germany’s support for the project.
Gabriel previously said that the project should comply with the E.U legislation and should not hurt gas transit to Eastern Europe through Ukraine. “This is our old position that was formed previous autumn…On our side, the position that was formed then is still kept,” the representative said.
The representative confirmed that Gabriel and Canete had a meeting and Gabriel again said that the Nord Stream-2 is an economic project and is implemented by a consortium of companies.
In September 2015, Gazprom signed a shareholder agreement on the 55-billion-cubic-meter Nord Stream-2 pipeline, which encompasses laying two more lines of the Nord Stream pipeline under the Baltic Sea to the shore of Germany. The agreement was signed with Germany’s E.ON and BASF/Wintershall, Royal Dutch Shell, OMV, which will own 10% each, and France’s Engie, which will get a 9% stake.
